Going from Argentina to Uruguay, I had a truly embarrassing experience. It was a currency issue. I thought I would have to take a bus or a taxi from Montevideo, so I tried to exchange it for Uruguayan pesos on the boat going to Montevideo. I was only aware of the information that the exchange rate of the Uruguayan peso was about twice that of the Argentine peso, so I tried to change it a little.

Then they said that at least 1000 Argentine pesos could be exchanged. I was a little hesitant, but when I got off the bus, I thought I would have to take a bus or a taxi immediately, so I changed it to Uruguayan pesos. However, the exchange rate was completely different from what was originally expected. For 1000 Argentinian pesos, I only got 294 Uruguayan pesos. Although the exchange rate gap was too big, it was a little uncomfortable to protest, and I lightly thought that there was a change in the exchange rate.

After that, I went to Montevideo and didn't spend any other money, only about 27 pesos for one bus ride. I took a leisurely walk around the city and took pictures. I arrived at the pier to go to my next destination. There was an exchange office, so I gave him 262.88 pesos in Uruguayan currency, but this time he only gave me 370 pesos in Argentine pesos. 

No, what happened? I exchanged 1000 Argentine pesos twice, and it was changed to 370 pesos.

I was so frustrated and asked the employee why this was happening. Then what he said was irrelevant. The exchange rate for buying and selling Argentine Peso and Uruguayan Peso was different. Of course, some differences would be natural. But this was too surprising.

 It seemed to represent that South America's economy was in turmoil. This is because there is no trust in each other's currency.

Now, I could understand what the blog seemed to say vaguely.  It would be better to exchange dollars in Argentina. Knowledge is power. but it's just that I injured my big nose while being careless. I felt like my eyes were open and my nose was cut. This seemed to be the common sense here. Otherwise, there would have been a lot of commotion in the currency exchange.

It was a moment when I was acutely aware of the social instability in South America. I came to think that living in such a society would never be easy. It was my experience to recognize that the word common sense could be completely different from country to country. It looked like I had to check everything. But how could we check everything? I came to think that it was important that I would belong to a group sharing a certain degree of common sense.

아르헨티나에서 우루과이를 가면서 실로 황당한 경험을 하였다. 환전문제였다. 몬테비데오에서 버스나 택시를 타야할 것 같아서 몬테비데오로 가는 배 안에서 우루과이 페소로 바꾸려고 했다. 대략 우루과이 페소가 아르헨티나 페소보다 변환 환율이 2배 정도라는 정보만 알고 있어 조금만 바꾸려고 했다.

그랬더니 최소 아르헨티나 1000 페소는 되어야 환전이 가능하다고 하였다. 좀 주저가 되었지만 버스에서 내리면 당장 버스나 택시를 타야 할 것 같아 우루과이 페소로 바꾸었다. 그런데 환율이 당초 예상과는 완전히 달랐다. 아르헨티나 1000페소를 주니 우루과이 돈으로 294페소만 준다. 변환 환률 격차가 너무 컸지만 달리 항의하기도 그렇고, 환율 변동이 있는 모양이라고 가볍게 생각했다.

이후 몬테비데오에 가서 달리 돈을 쓰지 않고 단지 버스 한 번 타느라고 27페소 정도를 썼을 뿐이다. 가볍게 걸어 시내 투어를 하고 사진을 찍었다. 다음 행선지로 가려고 선착장에 도착했다. 마침 환전소가 있기에 우루과이 화폐 262.88 페소를 주었더니 이번에는 아르헨티나 페소로 370페소만 주는 게 아닌가. 아니, 어떻게 된 것인가? 아르헨티나 1000페소를 2번 환전했더니 370페소로 바뀐 것이다.

너무 기가차서 왜 이런가하고 해당 직원에 따졌다. 그랬더니 하는 말이 가관이다. 아르헨티나 페소와 우루과이 페소를 환전할 때 사는 환율과 파는 환율이 다르다는 것이다. 물론 다른 것은 당연하다. 그런데 이 정도는 기가 막힌다.

 남미의 경제가 엉망이라는 것을 대변하는 것으로 보였다. 서로 상대국가의 화폐에 대한 신뢰가 없기 때문이다.

블로그에서 아르헨티나에서 환전 시 달러를 가지고 하는 것이 좋다는 말의 의미를 어렴풋이 이해할 것 같았다. 아는 것이 힘인데 그저 태무심하다가 큰 코를 다친 셈이다. 눈 뜨고 코를 베인 기분이다. 이곳에서는 이것이 상식인 모양이다. 그렇지 아니하면 환전소 내에서 큰 소동이 났을 것이다.

남미의 사회 불안정을 절실하게 절감하는 순간이었다. 이런 사회에서 생활한다는 것이 결코 쉽지 않을 것 같다는 생각을 하게 되었다. 상식이라는 말이 나라마다 전혀 다를 수 있다는 것을 체험한 셈이다. 모든 것을 다 체크해야 하는 모양이다. 그런데 어떻게 다 체크한단 말인가? 일정한 상식이 통하는 그룹에 속하는 것이 중요하다는 생각을 하게 되었다.
