When I saw the rural scene in Uruguay, I fell in love with the beauty of it unexpectedly. The countryside encountered on the way to Montevideo was quite impressive. There were many well-maintained farmhouses. The surroundings of the house were decorated with lawns and flowers, and large farmland and fields were spread out together.

All of them were surprisingly beautiful and relatively relaxed. When I was looking at the beautifully decorated house, it seemed that apparently, they were financially prosperous. It is the most well-maintained rural landscape among the six South American countries that I had experienced: Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Peru, Bolivia, and Uruguay.

Montevideo didn't look that big. It felt, however, to be a relatively modern city. Of course, old buildings were preserved well everywhere. If there were one old building, there was a modern building right next to it. The past and the present were in harmony.

It was 3 hours by boat from Buenos Aires, 4 hours by boat and bus, and 8 hours by bus. It complemented well with Buenos Aires, the Parisian city of South America. In other words, it was smaller than Buenos, had a beach and a beautiful city, so it seemed good for tourists to stay for a while.

Best of all, the countryside on the way to Montevideo was wonderful. It even felt like a satellite city of Buenos Aires. Actually, I thought it would be good to go to Montevideo occasionally while living in Buenos Aires. In the process of going there, you could take a boat, or take a bus and see the countryside. It would be healing.

Somewhat expensive South American cruises

The cruise here was also quite large. There wasn't much oscillation of the ship. Of course, it was less than the cruises I took in Northern Europe, so I felt a little fluctuating. Above all, the travel time is short, so I didn't worry too much about it. The cruise from Oslo to Stockholm was quite large. So that's why I couldn't even feel that I was on a boat.

But the fares were almost the same. At that time, I slept in the bunk, dinner, and a meal for less than $160. But here in Argentina, it was quite expensive at $138 for a 6-7 hour round trip by boat.

In terms of price, Northern Europe was the most expensive place, but it was difficult for me to understand that Buenos Aires to Montevideo in South America is more expensive than there. South America seems to be on the high side in many ways. I don't know if it's because I've been spending more because I've been rushing around without preparation. Even in that sense, it felt like a place where common sense doesn't work. It seemed undesirable for South America to feel so preoccupied with immediate interests. It looked like it needed a little more leeway.

It seemed to be the limit of South America, which was still economically poor, even if there was a kindness in the barn. Even in exchange rates, things that are difficult to understand with common sense were actually occurring. However, awareness of the problem or seriousness of this problem seemed to be too low.

In that respect, I thought that Southeast Asia could be relatively more competitive than South America. This was because, in Southeast Asia, it was difficult to find an irrational policy such as the exchange rate policy in South America.

In the meantime, South America had achieved considerable development, but a series of vicious circles continue, such as experiencing an economic crisis shortly thereafter. The policy needed to be implemented at a longer-term level. And there was an urgent need to shift to a policy based on common sense. Only when the world and credibility were restored could we dream of the future of South America. After exploring the secretly beautiful Montevideo, Uruguay, I took a cruise back to Buenos Aires, Argentina. On the other hand, it was a direct flight to the cruise without taking a bus.

The cruise dock was just past the downtown core. It was quite far from the bus terminal. Cruise piers were divided into ABC by each company.

After exploring the city of Montevideo, I returned to the marina. Each shipping company had a separate terminal. I heard there was a Korean restaurant nearby, but it's hard to find. I had wanted to eat Korean food... .

우루과이의 농촌 모습을 보면서 의외로 아름다움에 반했다. 몬테비데오로 가는 길에서 접한 농촌은 인상적이다. 잘 가꾸어진 농가가 적지 않다. 집 주변은 잔디와 꽃 등으로 꾸며져 있고 넓은 농원과 벌판이 함께 펼쳐져 있다.

의외로 아름답고 상대적으로 여유가 있어 보인다. 집을 아름답게 꾸민 것을 보니 경제적으로 풍족해 보인다. 필자가 경험한 남미 6개국 즉 브라질, 아르헨티나, 칠레, 페루, 볼리비아 그리고 우루과이 중에서 그나마 가장 잘 가꾸어진 농촌 풍경이다.

몬테비데오는 그리 크게 느껴지지는 않았다. 그렇지만 상대적으로 가장 현대적인 도시로 느껴졌다. 물론 곳곳에 과거 건물이 보존되어 있다. 옛 건축물이 하나 있으면 바로 옆은 현대건물이 있는 식이다. 과거와 현대가 잘 조화를 이루고 있다.

부에노스아이레스와는 배로 3시간, 배와 버스로 4시간, 그리고 버스로 8시간 거리다. 남미의 파리인 부에노스아이레스와 잘 보완관계를 이루고 있다. 즉 부에노스보다는 덜 크면서 해변도 가지고 나름 아름다운 시가지도 있어서 관광객들이 잠시 머무르기에 좋아 보였다.

무엇보다도 몬테비데오로 가는 시골 풍경이 멋지다. 마치 부에노스아이레스의 위성도시 같은 느낌마저 든다. 실제로 부에노스아이레스에서 거주하면서 가끔 몬테비데오로 가면 좋을 것 같다. 그곳으로 가는 과정에 배를 타도 좋고 아니면 버스를 타고 시골 전경을 접하는 것도 힐링이 되리라.

다소 비싼 가격의 남미 크루즈

이곳 크루즈도 제법 크다. 배의 요동이 그리 많지는 않다. 물론 북유럽에서 탄 크루즈보다는 적어서 조금 요동이 느껴지기는 하다. 무엇보다 배 여행시간이 짧아 그리 신경이 쓰이지 않는다. 오슬로에서 스톡홀름을 갈 때에 탄 크루즈는 상당이 컸다. 그래서인지 배를 타고 있는지조차 제대로 느낄 수 없다.

그런데 운임은 거의 비슷하다. 당시에 침대칸에서 잠을 자고 저녁과 식사를 다해서 160달러가 채 되지 않았다. 그런데 이곳 아르헨티나에서는 왕복 6~7시간의 배 여행에 138달러이니 상당히 비싼 편이다.

물가로 따지면 북유럽이 가장 비싼 곳인데 남미 부에노스아이레스에서 몬테비데오까지가 더 비싸니 이해하기 어려울 정도다. 남미는 여러 가지로 바가지가 심한 편인 것 같기도 하다. 준비 없이 급하게 다니다 보니 더 많은 지출을 하게 된 것인지 모른다. 그런 면에서도 상식이 통하지 않는 곳이라는 느낌마저 든다. 남미가 너무 당장의 이익에 급급한 것처럼 느껴지는 것은 바람직하지 않아 보인다. 좀 더 여유를 가진 모습이 필요해 보인다.

곳간에서 인심이 난다고 어쩌면 아직도 경제적으로 열악한 남미의 한계인 것으로도 보인다. 심지어 환율 등에서도 상식적으로 이해하기 어려운 일이 실제 발생하고 있다. 그런데 이의 문제성이나 심각성에 대한 인식이 너무 미흡하게 보인다.

그런 면에서는 동남아가 남미보다는 상대적으로 더 경쟁력이 있을 수 있겠다는 생각을 하게 된다. 동남아에서는 남미의 환율정책과 같은 비상식적 정책은 찾아보기 어렵기 때문이다.

그간 남미는 상당한 발전을 이루다가도 얼마가지 않아 경제위기를 겪는 등 일련의 악순환이 지속되는 면이 있다. 좀 더 장기차원에서 정책이 이루어질 필요가 있다. 그리고 상식선에 바탕을 둔 정책으로의 선회가 절실한 상황이다. 세계와 신뢰성이 회복되어야만 남미의 미래를 꿈꿀 수 있다. 은근히 아름다운 우루과이 몬테비데오를 둘러보고 다시 크루즈를 타고 아르헨티나 부에노스아이레스로 돌아왔다. 오는 편은 달리 버스를 타지 않고 크루즈로 가는 직항 편이었다.

크루즈 선착장은 다운타운 중심지를 지나서 있었다. 버스터미널과는 상당히 떨어져 있는 셈이다. 크루즈 선착장은 각 회사별로 ABC로 구분되어 있었다.

몬테비데오 시내를 둘러보고 선착장으로 돌아왔다. 선박회사 별로 별도의 터미널이 있다. 근처에 한국음식점이 있다고 들었는데 찾아보기 어렵다. 한식이 먹고 싶었는데….
