I hurried to prepare to leave for Machu Picchu, the floating city of the lost Inca Empire. I once went to a Peru Scotia bank and tried to withdraw dollars. Yesterday, the guest house staff advised me that it would be good to withdraw around $1,500 in cash and kept it.

First, I needed to buy a train ticket to Machu Picchu. Round trip train fare was $140. It's less than 2 hours away and it's too expensive. It was currently 9:10 am. It departed three hours later, at 11:52.

I hurried to the bus stop to go to the train station. The minibus was standing. A lot of tourists were moving toward there. I showed the driver my train ticket. The driver said, "The time is too tight," and recommended that I would take a car, instead, parked nearby. There were already three people in the car. The cost was 15 soles which was cheaper than expected.

On the way, I saw an amazing sight. A few days ago, heavy rains caused a landslide, flooding the road or setting rocks. There were not many trees on the mountain, so it seems that the soil had been washed away.

These were truly horrific scenes. The thought that it would be dangerous if it rains one more time suddenly came to mind. After an hour and a half, it's finally the train station. The area around the station was clean and comfortable. The bathroom was also very modern. The train to Machu Picchu was a bit unusual. The ceiling was made of glass, so I could see the high mountaintop. It was amazing that the speed was about 30 km/h. 

  

The side of the railroad was a valley and the other side showed the rugged Andes Mountains as it was. In fact, the valley was flooded with heavy rains a few days ago, and it was spectacular. The train shaked horribly. I almost got sickness due to such shake.

It felt like the train was gradually stepping into the past. Back to the time of the splendid Inca Empire...

   

The weather was sunny and it rained a little as we got closer to Machu Picchu. The sun was very strong, but it was cool because it rained a little. It was the rainy season in Peru now.

The train shaked so much that it seemed a bit difficult for tourists as well. It was difficult to find vivid images of the early days. It's raining quite a bit now. The weather was fickle. It would be nice if it didn't come too much, but...

  

Finally Machu Picchu. it rained very hard.  First I had to buy an entrance ticket. 152 soles. I had only dollars in my pocket. They only accepted the Peruvian currency, the Sol. I ran to the nearest dollar exchange counter.

I also needed to buy a bus ticket to Machu Picchu. $24 round trip. This time I should get dollars. It's still pouring rain. The bus started even though there weren't many people on board. The bus ran very fast.  It's terrifying. Further, it's raining, it's uphill, the incline was steep, and even though it's a cliff to the right, it speeded up regardless of such circumstances. After driving for almost 30 minutes, I finally arrived at the entrance to Machu Picchu.

As I got closer to the entrance, the weather was completely changed into be clear as if it had not rained at all. The valley was overflown with water. The whole world was looked down.

 

Tickets were checked at the entrance. The explanation of the Machu Picchu guider was impressive: "You can't use the toilet from here." After walking for a while, I could see Machu Picchu at a glance. It was located on the top of the mountain. It's like a fortress prepared for any invasion.

  

Even the Inca researchers had not known what the structure was intended for. I was just guessing that it looked like it was prepared for any invasion. Lima was quietly grazing. It looked peaceful.

It was mysterious how such a building could be built in a high mountain area.

Below, the rugged mountains of the Andes were splendidly boasting their majesty. Machu Picchu was slept in the mountains until it was discovered in 1911 by Hiram Bingham. Unlike the ruins of the Inca Empire, which were mostly destroyed after the Spanish conquest, Machu Picchu was found preserved almost close to its original form and brought to us a great sensation.

 

Known as the “Lost Air City,” travelers from all over the world gathered to see it. I would be one of them, too.  I stayed here for about an hour and a half.

And then I got back. When I got on the train, I got a free evening snack from the train. I was a little hungry even though dinner time was ambiguous, but it was too delicious to me. It was simple dinner which consisted of sandwiches, drinks and snacks. The way which I got back to was a little more pleasant because I was already used to it.

The next destination was not fixed yet, but I did not have to worry about it.  I just felt that once  I got to Cusco and then I would decide the next destination  according to each circumstances. The flooding in Machu Picchu Valley was truly shocking. It made me feel like that it would be the wrath of the destroyed Inca Empire.

 

필자는 사라진 잉카제국의 공중도시 마추픽추로 떠날 준비를 서둘렀다. 일단 페루 스코시아 은행에 가서 달러를 인출하려고 했다. 어제 민박집 직원은 1500 달러 정도를 찾아 가지고 있으면 좋을 것 같다고 충고했다.

먼저 마추픽추로 가는 기차표를 사야 한다. 왕복 열차 요금이 140달러. 도대체 2시간 거리도 안 되는 데 너무 비싸다. 현재 오전 9시 10여분. 3시간여 뒤인 11시 52분 출발한다.

기차역으로 가기 위해 급히 버스정류장으로 향했다. 미니버스가 서 있다. 여행객을 많이 태워 출발할 모양이다. 필자의 기차표를 보여주었다. 운전기사 말이 "시간이 안 맞는다"며 인근에 세워진 승용차를 타라고 권한다. 승용차에는 이미 세 사람이 타고 있다. 비용은 15솔. 생각보다 저렴하다.

가는 도중에 놀라운 광경을 보았다. 며칠 전 폭우로 산사태가 나서 도로가 침수되거나 바위가 내려앉았다. 산에 나무가 많지 않아 토사가 떠내려 왔다 보다.

가히 끔찍한 장면들이다. 폭우가 한차례 더 내리면 위험할 것 같다는 생각이 불현듯 든다. 1시간 반이 지나니 드디어 기차역이다. 역 주변이 나름 깔끔하고 쾌적하다. 화장실도 아주 현대식이다. 마추픽추 행(行) 기차는 좀 특이하다. 천장이 유리로 되어 있어 높은 산정의 모습을 볼 수 있다. 속도는 거의 30km대. 천천히 달린다.

  

철로 옆은 계곡이고 그 반대편은 안데스산맥의 험준한 모습을 그대로 보여준다. 실제 계곡에는 며칠 전 폭우로 물이 불어 장관이다. 기차는 지독할 정도로 심하게 흔들린다. 거의 멀미가 날 정도다.

기차는 점차 과거로 들어가는 느낌이다. 과거 화려한 잉카제국의 시대로......

   

날씨가 화창하다가 마추픽추에 가까워지자 비가 약간 내린다. 햇살이 너무 거셌는데 비가 약간 오니 시원해서 좋다. 페루는 지금이 우기다.  

기차가 너무 흔들리니 관광객들도 좀 힘든 모양이다. 초기의 생생한 모습은 찾아보기 어렵다. 이제 비가 제법 내린다. 날씨가 변덕스럽다. 너무 많이만 오지 않으면 시원해서 좋으련만...

 

 

드디어 마추픽추

 

마침내 마추픽추다. 비가 아주 심하게 내린다. 거의 폭우 수준이다. 먼저 입장티켓을 사야했다. 152솔. 주머니에 달러만 있다. 페루 화폐인 솔만 받는단다. 근처 달러 환전 창구로 뛰어갔다.

마추픽추까지 가는 버스표도 끊어야 한다. 왕복 24달러. 이번에는 달러를 받는다. 여전히 장대비가 쏟아진다. 버스를 탔다. 사람이 많이 타지 않았는데 출발한다. 속도를 아주 내고 달린다. 겁날 정도다. 비가 오고, 오르막이고, 경사가 급하고, 나아가 오른쪽은 낭떠러지인데도 아랑곳하지 않고 속도를 낸다. 거의 30분을 달리니 마침내 마추픽추 입구에 도착한다.

입구에 가까이 오니 언제 비가 왔느냐는 듯이 완전히 날씨가 개였다. 계곡에는 물이 넘쳐흐른다. 온 세상이 다 아래로 보인다.

 

입구에서 표 검사를 하였다. "여기서부터는 화장실을 사용할 수 없다"는 마추픽추 안내원의 말이 인상적이다. 한참을 걸어 올라가니 마추픽추가 한 눈에 보인다. 산 정상에 위치해 있다. 아무래도 외침에 대비한 요새 같다. 

  

잉카 연구자들조차 이 구조물이 어떤 용도인지는 알 수가 없다. 아무래도 외침에 대비한 것으로 보인다는 추측만 해볼 뿐이다. 리마가 한가로이 풀을 뜯고 있다. 평화로워 보였다.

높은 산악지역에 이 같은 건물을 어떻게 만들 수 있었는지 불가사의하다.

아래에 안데스산맥의 험준한 산들이 멋지게 그 위용을 자랑하고 있다. 마추픽추는 하이램 빙엄(Hiram Bingham)이 1911년에 발견하기 전까지 산세 깊숙한 곳에서 잠자고 있었다. 스페인 정복 이후 대부분 파괴된 잉카 제국의 유적들과 다르게 원형 가까이 보존된 채로 발견되어 커다란 반향을 불러일으켰던 마추픽추.

 

‘잃어버린 공중 도시’로 불리며 이를 보기 위해 전 세계 여행자들이 모여들고 있다. 필자도 그들 중 한 명이다. 이곳에서 1시간 30분 가량 머무르며 감탄의 시간으로 채운다.

돌아가는 길. 막상 기차에 오르니 저녁 간식을 무료로 제공한다. 감사한 일이다. 배도 약간 고프고 저녁시간이 애매했는데 잘 되었다. 샌드위치에 음료수, 과자다. 가는 길은 익숙해서인지 좀 더 정겹다.

다음 행선지가 애매하지만 지금 걱정한다고 해결될 문제가 아니다. 그저 쿠스코에 도착해서 상황에 맞게 방향을 정해야겠다. 마추픽추 계곡 물살은 가히 충격적이다. 마치 파괴된 잉카제국의 분노를 느끼게 한다.
