Originally planned for a trip to Central and South America, the schedule was delayed a bit because of the beauty of Northern Europe. The plan was entangled by over-planning in the desire to visit Northern Europe out of greed. This made it difficult to spend sufficient time in Copenhagen, Denmark and Amsterdam, the Netherlands. I decided to enjoy fully to the extent possible even if there is a shortage of time.

The bus from Oslo, Norway to Copenhagen, Denmark was a double-decker bus, which was relatively good. Last time, on the way from Stockholm to Oslo, I suffered a kind of trauma during the time of bus change. But this time, it was fortunate that there was no need to change buses otherwise.

For the bus from Tallinn, Estonia to St. Petersburg, Russia, separate departure and entry procedures were a bit complicated. However, when I took the bus from Oslo to Copenhagen, there was no immigration procedure at all. Anyhow, I do not know the reason, but that was good to me.

However, it rained more than expected on the way. Fortunately, it wasn't too cold inside the bus. I was very worried because I was not feeling well. I slept surprisingly well when I sat on the bus. I felt like I slept really well until I arrived in Copenhagen because I was so tired.

I tried not to make the mistake which I did in Tallinn, Estonia (I got to the bus stop but couldn't get off), but I almost made another mistake. Passengers got off at a stop other than the terminal, so I thought I had to go a little further to the terminal, but most of the passengers got off. With anxiety, I asked the bus driver that this is the Copenhagen bus stop. I later found out that Copenhagen does not have a bus terminal unlike any other, but the bus terminal was just a PICK UP point on the road. It was just so amazing.

Since the country was small and the area also so narrow, it seems that there were no complex terminal buildings. Still, there were a lot of buses going to foreign countries, so I personally thought that they needed a signboard to guide these buses and a facility where passengers could wait indoors. But they did not get such facilities against my expectation. There seemed to be no such consideration. How could I really understand this?

On the other hand, the central train station was nicely positioned as a very grand building right next to it. In Europe, trains are the main means of transportation. Buses are also a popular means of transportation. It was true that there was some discrimination between bus and train. Historically, the train would have been preferred. There seemed to be no consideration for bus passengers at all. It was difficult for me as a foreigner to understand why bus passengers had to wait on the road in winter like now.

Getting off at the Copenhagen Bus Terminal without a building in the morning was just absurd. There was no other way, so I walked to the central station first. In Central Station, all the shops were open. To appease the coldness, I ordered coffee and crassons and ate it as a simple breakfast.

In Copenhagen, everything was centralized around the central station. Art galleries, museums, central bank, government buildings, royal palaces, cathedrals, etc. were visible.

Above all, I decided to see the most famous statue of the Little Mermaid. It was located  a little away from here. I had thought taking the subway, but it was about 40 minutes by walk, and fortunately the rain stopped. Even though the weather were getting colder, I decided to walk to see the scenery of the whole city. On the way, I found out a play area for the little kids in the city center. It seemed strager to me, but was quite impressive. Anyhow, Copenhagen was one  of the happiest cities in the world. That's why all the people passing by seemed so happy.

There was a lot of bike lanes. In fact, the lanes of bicycles were almost identical to those of automobiles. They seemed to ride a bicycle for health. It reminded me of when I was in Germany. Germany also loved bicycles. 

In Germany, about half of sidewalk was left as bike lanes. However, it appears that half of the whole road here was a bicycle road. Bicycle would be as important as a car. Sidewalks are not too small compared to the size of bike paths or lanes. Pedestrians seemed to be considerate of cyclists.

The view of the city going to the Little Mermaid was so cute and beautiful. The little mermaid statue was located in a park by the sea. The park was so refreshing and beautiful. Especially, the air was so refreshing because it was morning, and the lake, lawn, statue, and beach were in all in harmony and it was so impressive like a work of art. The clean and fresh air brought all of people passing by to the level of climax. I will be able to find the reason why it was allged to have the world's number one happiest environments.

원래 중남미 여행을 목표로 계획을 세웠으나 북유럽의 아름다움에 취하여 다소 일정이 지체되었다. 욕심을 내어 북유럽을 다녀 보고자 하는 마음에 일정을 무리하게 짜는 바람에 계획이 얽히는 상황이 발생하였다. 그러다 보니 덴마크 코펜하겐과 네덜란드 암스테르담에서 충분한 시간을 보내기 어렵게 되었다. 짧은 시간이나마 충분히 즐기고자 마음 먹었다.

노르웨이 오슬로에서 덴마크 코펜하겐으로 하는 버스는 2층 버스였는데 비교적 괜찮았다. 지난번 스웨덴 스톡홀름에서 오슬로로 가는 과정에서 워낙 고생을 해서 약간의 트라우마가 있었다. 그러나 이번에는 달리 버스를 갈아탈 필요가 없어서 그나마 다행이었다.

에스토니아 탈린에서 러시아 상트페테르부르크로 가는 버스는 별도의 출국과 입국수속이 좀 복잡했다. 그런데 오슬로에서 코펜하겐으로 가는 버스는 달리 출입국 수속이 전혀 없었다. 그 점이 좋았다.

다만 가는 도중에 생각보다 비가 많아 왔다. 다행스럽게 버스 안은 그리 춥지는 않았다. 몸이 좋지 않아 상당한 걱정이 되었다. 버스 안에 앉아 잠을 청하니 의외로 잠이 잘 왔다. 코펜하겐에 도착할 때까지 정말 푹 잔 것 같았다. 아무래도 피곤이 누적되어선지 잠을 잘 잔 모양이다.

지난번 에스토니아 탈린에서의 실수(버스정류장에 도착했으나 내리지 못했었다.)를 다시 범하지 않으려고 했으나 또 실수할 뻔했다. 터미널이 아닌 정류장에서 승객이 내리길래 내심 터미널까진 좀 더 가야하구나 생각했는데 대부분의 승객이 내리는 것이었다. 불안한 마음에 버스 기사에게 물어보니 여기가 코펜하겐 버스정류장이란다. 나중에 알게 된 것인데 코펜하겐은 달리 버스터미널이 있는 것이 아니라 단지 픽업(PICK UP) 포인트만 있다는 것이다. 신기할 뿐이었다.

나라가 작고 면적이 좁으니 달리 복잡하게 터미널 건물이 없는 모양이다. 그래도 그렇지 외국으로 가는 버스 편이 많을 텐데 이들 버스를 안내하는 안내판 등이 필요하고 승객이 실내에서 기다릴 수 있는 시설이 필요하지 않는가. 이러한 배려는 전혀 없어 보였다. 과연 이를 어떻게 이해할 수 있을까?

반면 중앙역은 바로 옆에 아주 웅장한 건물로 멋있게 자리매김하고 있었다. 유럽은 아무래도 기차가 주요 이동수단인 곳이 많다. 버스 역시 많이 이용하는 대중 수단인데 차별을 둘까?  버스 승객에 대한 배려가 전혀 없어 보였다. 지금과 같은 겨울철에 승객이 길에서 그냥 기다리도록 하다니 이해하기 어려웠다.

아침에 건물도 없는 코펜하겐 버스터미널에 내리기가 황당하기만 했다. 달리 방법이 없어서 일단 중앙역사로 걸어갔다. 중앙역사에서는 가게 문들이 다 열려 있었다. 추위를 달래기 위하여 커피와 크라송을 시켜 간단한 아침으로 대신하였다.

코펜하겐 역시 중앙역을 중심으로 모든 것이 집중되어 있었다. 미술관, 박물관, 중앙은행, 정부청사, 왕궁, 대성당 등등이 보였다.

무엇보다 가장 유명한 인어공주상을 보기로 했다. 그나마 가장 멀리 떨어져 있었다. 지하철을 탈까 하다가 걸어서 40여분이어서 비도 그치고 날씨도 덜 추워져서 풍광도 볼 겸해서 걸어가기로 했다, 걸으면서 느낀 시내 전경은 그저 동화 속의 건물들 같았다. 실제로 시내 중심 안에 어린 아이들이 즐길 수 있는 놀이 공간도 있었다.

그리고 보니 세계에서 행복지수가 가장 높은 도시가 바로 코펜하겐이다. 그래서인지 지나치는 사람들의 표정이 다 즐거워 보였다.

유난히 자전거 행렬이 많다. 실제로 자전거의 차선이 거의 자동차 차선과 거의 같다.

건강을 위하여 자전거를 타는 모양이다. 독일에 있었을 때의 모습이 생각난다. 독일도 자전거 사랑이 대단하다. 그런데 이곳은 더해 보였다.

독일은 인도의 반 정도가 자전거 도로다. 그런데 이곳은 차도의 반이 자전거 도로다. 자동차만큼이나 그 비중이 높다. 인도 역시 자전거 도로나 차선의 크기에 비해 결코 적지 않다. 그만큼 보행자는 자전거를 타는 사람을 배려한 것으로 보인다. 

인어공주상으로 가는 시내 전경은 너무 아기자기하고 아름답다. 인어공주상은 바닷가의 공원에 위치하고 있었다. 그 공원이 너무 상큼하고 멋스러웠다. 아침이어서인지 너무 상쾌하고 호수, 잔디, 조각상, 해변 등 모든 것이 조화를 잘 이루어 하나의 예술작품처럼 느껴졌다. 칼칼한 공기는 이 모든 것을 절정에 이르게 만들었다. 이래서 행복지수가 세계 1위인 모양이다.
