The city train in Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia, was unusual. It was not only a subway, but it was also an elevated tram (a tram running on rails laid on the road). In particular, the elevated tram area is 5 to 10 stories high, so I could see the whole city. And I could get a panoramic view of the city at a glance.

 

It was a scene that was difficult to see in any city. I thought that someone designed it and made it beautiful considering the city skyline. It was so amazing to be able to see all the city views while using public transportation.

 

Also, the air conditioning was good on the tram, so it was comfortable. It was well designed so that it could be easily accessed anywhere in the city because it was connected to a bus. It will be especially nice at night.

  

It was also surprising that the tram stops were so large. It was a simple design without fancy decorations, but it looked spacious. It was so good that there were no complicated decorations inside the stop. It was simple and simple without showing various propaganda materials.

 

It was very impressive that it was designed to enjoy a wonderful city view among the beautiful high-rise buildings. It was like flying through an elevated building. It was unusual and surprising that it was taken care of so that you could relax in the city center and even find the view.

 

Kuala Lumpur's downtown area was fascinating. There were many forests everywhere, and the houses look beautiful together. And I could see incredibly tall skyscrapers everywhere. In the meantime, subway and elevated trams passed by like a swimmer. Perhaps this image was felt as a model for the city of the future.

 

The stops for subways and elevated trams were like air stops in the city center. The h-eight seemed to be almost 50 m above the ground. As a result, the view overlooking the city center was wonderful. It felt like floating in the air.

  

I was curious as to why they designed such a large stop, even in high air. The view of driving a car could be viewed from a high air stop. I didn't feel so bad. rather good. It was a different feeling to look down at a fast-moving car.

 

The train went both underground and over the aerial overpass. You could also see the surrounding buildings and see the entire city at a glance. it's just weird I felt like running through buildings.

 

It showed the charm of Kuala Lumpur. I didn't know how time went with the unique charm that could not be felt in any other city. Especially at night, the temperature was cool, so it was perfect for looking at the city view.

 

I headed to Independence Square in Kuala Lumpur. It was close to the city center, so I walked for a light draft beer in the evening.

 

At the time of British rule, there was a building where the governor-general was located, and in front of it was Independence Square or Merdeka Square. There were two nice European-style restaurant buildings across the street, and it was said that it was a membership-based restaurant enjoyed only by the British aristocrats during the colonial period. 

 

Merdeka Independence Square had a high historical symbolism. It was said that this was because it was the square where independence was declared at midnight on August 31, 1957, the British Union Jack was lowered, and the Malaysian flag was raised.

 

The British government building, called the Sultan Abdul Samad Building, was a beautiful Mughal-style building built in 1897. Especially when I first saw the night view, it looked even better. It is said that it is now being used by the Supreme Court and the Textile Museum. A small river (?) flowed around the Sultan Abdul Samad building, making it even more charming. There were so many buildings of financial institutions that it now looked like a financial center.

 

I had read somewhere that the city of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, is trying to intensively manage and maintain old buildings of cultural heritage value in order to inscribe the entire city as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

 

I kept hearing music in front of the plaza, and when I asked him, there was no performance today, but he seemed to be practicing. I wish I could see them perform, but I could not. see it.

 

Before visiting Merdeka Independence Square, I visited Central Square.

 

As I was going out of the hotel to see the city, a scene suddenly came to my mind. It was a warning from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs the last time they entered the Cambodian border. I was worried about the phrase, “Be careful not to be bitten by mosquitoes and wear long-sleeved clothes whenever possible.” It was because I left my cardigan at the dorm because I had a tuk-tuk in Vientiane, Laos.

 

On the way to Central Square, it started to rain. It was a dry season, so it was strange that it rained in a dry season. However, because of my experiences in Europe in the past, I always carried an umbrella in my backpack, so I took it out and walked slowly. Shortly thereafter, the rain fell to almost torrential rain. So, I went back to the Central Market, which I just had a brief look at. I was thinking of getting some rain and looking at things. And if possible, I wanted to purchase a cardigan type.

 

It was a relatively modern market. There were various items such as souvenirs and other souvenirs. I was thinking of buying a cardigan, but there were few stores that dealt with cardigans. I had almost given up, but I thought I would need long-sleeved clothes to reduce mosquito bites in the evening. So, when I looked for long-sleeved shirts, the shirts worn by the locals didn't look that bad.

 

When I tried on a few of them and asked the price, they didn't give me a proper discount. I was trying to buy a shirt with long sleeves, but I remembered that I could not find a suitable market or store, so I decided to buy it even if it was a bit burdensome. The clerk continued to emphasize that the material of this shirt was silk. However, its authenticity is not known at all.

 

Still, since it was silk, I wanted to believe it. In the past, the silk tie I had bought from a silk factory in Shanghai, it was so good that I still had used it. After that, my blind love for silk had begun. I would like to hope that the silk shirt I bought at the Central Market will bring good luck and happiness to me.

  

In fact, it was true that Malaysia has the second highest national income in Southeast Asia after Singapore. Also, almost all Malaysians seemed fluent in English. I was really surprised because it seemed that anyone could communicate in English on the roadside or in shops.

 

It seemed that the shirt was a bit expensive even under Korean price standards, but  I needed long sleeves right now, so there was no other way.

 

The wake-up call came at 5:30 in the morning. Normally, I wouldn't be impressed at all, but this was the first wake-up call service I received while traveling to Southeast Asia. This was because it was difficult to request a wake-up call service in Thailand, Chiang Mai, Laos, and Cambodia because there were no telephones. It felt like I'm back in a civilized world. However, in the hotel, there were a phone and a TV, etc., but no refrigerator.

 

I took a shower, packed my bags, went down to the front desk, checked out, and headed to the bus terminal. When I touched the integrated transportation card I bought yesterday, a warning sound rang out saying, 'The balance is insufficient.' I was momentarily confused.

 

Came to think of it, yesterday I used all my ringgit and didn't have a dime. When I tried to get a ticket through a nearby transportation card vending machine, a sign came up saying ‘cash only’. No I can't!

 

When I asked a passerby if they could buy tickets with a credit card, they said no. So I asked the person for permission and asked if he could buy a dollar with ringgit, and I was able to purchase it for only 3 ringgit. Fortunately, I was able to communicate in English, so I was able to avoid difficulties. 

 

It was morning time, so there weren't many people. But it was pleasant. After an hour on the bus from the bus terminal, I arrived at the airport. When I looked at the ticket, it was Terminal 1, not Terminal 2. So when I asked the driver how to get to Terminal 1, he told me that the airport shuttle was right in front of me. When I got on it, I was told to change buses again on the way. Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 were separated by a considerable distance. Heathrow Airport in London, England. It seems that the airport was built similarly, probably because it was under British rule.

 

There was also Malay Air on a flight to Jakarta, so I was able to check-in only after going through confusion, such as mistaken for a counter for a while. As it was said that automatic ticket vending machines could not be used due to circumstances, I immediately thought that Korea was the best in this regard.

  

The whole airport was well decorated and neat and tidy. All the facilities at the airport were also large and spacious. I wondered why they made everything so big and spacious. I'd like to know more about it next time. It was seen as the most modern city in Southeast Asia and the most promising country in the future with relatively good English communication.

 

말레이지아 수도 쿠알라룸푸르의 도심기차는 특이했다. 지하철이기도 하지만 고가 트램(도로 위에 깔린 레일 위를 주행하는 노면전차)이기도 했다. 특히 고가 트램지역이 건물 5~10층 높이로 다녀 도심을 다 볼 수 있다. 그리고 탁 트인 시내 전경이 한 눈에 다 들어온다.

 

그 어느 도시에서도 구경하기 어려운 장면이다. 누가 고안했는지 도심의 스카이 라인까지 고려해 아름답게 만들었다는 생각이 들었다. 대중 교통수단이면서도 시내 전경을 다 내려 볼 수 있으니 너무 신기했다.

 

그리고 트램에는 에어컨도 잘 틀어주어 쾌적하였다. 버스와 연계되어 있어 시내 어느 곳도 쉽게 접근할 수 있게 잘 설계되어 있었다. 특히 야간에는 더욱 멋질 것이다.

  

트램의 정류장이 너무나 크다는 점도 놀라웠다. 화려하게 장식하지 않고 단순한 디자인이지만 여유가 있어 보였다. 정류장 내에 복잡한 장식이 없어 너무 좋았다. 각종 선전물 등이 보이지 않고 단순 심플했다.

 

아름다운 고가 건물 사이에 멋진 시내 풍광을 즐기게 설계된 점이 너무 인상적이었다. 마치 고가 건물사이로 비행하는 느낌이었다. 도심에서 여유를 찾고 그 전망마저 찾을 수 있도록 배려한 점이 특이하고 신기할 따름이었다.

 

쿠알라룸푸르의 시가지는 매력적이다. 곳곳에 숲이 많고 집들이 모여 아름답게 보인다. 그리고 엄청나게 높은 마천루가 곳곳에 보인다. 그리고 그 사이에 지하철 겸 고가 트램이 헤엄치듯 지나간다. 어쩌면 이런 모습이 미래의 도심의 하나의 모델로 같이 느껴졌다.

 

지하철 내지 고가 트램의 정류장은 마치 도심 내 항공 정류장 같았다. 높이가 거의 지상에서 50m 이상이 되는 것 같았다. 그러다 보니 도심을 내려다 보는 전경이 멋지다. 마치 허공에 떠 있는 느낌이다.

 

그리고 그 공간 역시 여유가 있다. 너무 넓어 감당하기 힘들 정도이다. 허공에 있는 공중 정류장까지 갈려고 하면 이동이 쉽지 않다. 에스컬레이터로 가더라도 한참(?)을 가야하는 느낌이 들 정도이다.

 

어떻게 이렇게 큰 정류장을, 그것도 높은 허공에 정류장을 설계한 이유가 궁금하다. 차를 몰고 다니는 전경을 높은 허공의 정류장에서 유유자적하게 내려다 볼 수 있게 되어 있다. 기분이 그리 나쁘지 않다. 오히려 너무 좋다. 빠르게 달리는 승용차를 내려다 보는 기분이 색다르다.

 

지하로도 다니고 공중 고가에도 기차가 다니는 양상이다. 그러면서 주변 빌딩도 보고 나아가 시내 전경을 한눈에 다 볼 수 있다. 그저 신기하다. 마치 빌딩 사이로 다니는 기분마져 든다.

 

쿠알라룸푸르만의 매력을 여지없이 보여준다. 어느 도시에서도 느낄 수 없는 색다른 매력에 시간가는 줄을 모르겠다. 특히 밤은 기온도 서늘하여 시내 전경을 쳐다보기에 더 없이 좋다.

 

쿠알라룸푸르의 독립광장으로 향하였다. 시내 중심에 가까워 저녁에 가볍게 생맥주나 한잔하려고 걸어 갔다.

 

영국이 지배할 당시 총독부가 있는 건물이 있고 그 앞에 독립광장 즉 메르데카 광장이 있었다. 그 건너에 유럽풍의 멋진 식당 건물이 2곳 있었는데 식민지 당시 영국 귀족층만이 즐긴 회원제 식당이라고 한다. 어쩐지 유럽풍의 분위기를 풍겼다.

 

메르데카 독립광장은 역사적 상징성이 높다. 1957년 8월 31일 자정에 독립을 선언하고 영국기 유니언잭을 내리고 말레이지아 국기를 게양한 광장이기 때문이라고 한다.

 

영국의 총독부 건물은 술탄 압둘 사마드 건물이라 부르는데 1897년 건축된 무굴 양식의 아름다운 건축물이었다. 특히 야경으로 먼저 접하니 더 멋지게 보였다. 지금은 대법원과 섬유박물관 등에서 쓰고 있다고 한다. 술탄 압둘 사마드 건물 주변에 조그만한 강(?)이 흘러 운치가 더 좋았다. 지금은 금융 중심가로 보일 정도로 금융기관의 빌딩이 많이 모여 있었다.

 

말레이시아 쿠알라룸푸르 시 당국은 도시 전체를 유네스코 세계문화유산으로 등재하기 위해 문화유산 가치가 있는 노후건축물을 집중적으로 관리 유지하려고 애쓰고 있다는 글을 어디서 본 적이 있다.

 

광장 앞에서 음악소리가 계속 들려 물어보니 오늘 공연은 없지만 연습을 하는 모양이다. 공연을 하는 것을 볼 수 있었으면 좋으련만 아쉬웠다. 

시가지 구경을 위하여 호텔밖으로 나서는 데 문득 한 장면이 떠올랐다. 지난 번 캄보디아 국경 안으로 들어 왔을 때 외무부의 경고 문구였다. ‘모기에 물리지 않도록 주의하고 가능한 긴팔 복장으로 다녀라’는 문구에 신경이 쓰였다. 라오스의 비엔티안에서 급히 툭툭을 하는 바람에 숙소에 카디건을 두고 왔기 때문이었다.

 

센트럴 광장으로 가는 길에 비가 내리기 시작했다.건기여서 비가 올리가 없는데 신기하였다. 그렇지만 과거 유럽에서의 경험 때문에 배낭에 항상 우산을 휴대하고 다녀서 우산을 꺼내어 천천히 걸어 갔다. 좀 지나자 비가 거의 폭우 수준으로 내렸다. 그래서 그냥 간단히 보고 지나친 센트럴 마켓을 다시 들어 갔다. 비를 좀 피하고 물건도 볼 생각이었다. 그리고 가능하면 카디간 종류를 구입하고자 하였다.

 

비교적 현대적 스타일의 시장이었다. 기념품 기타 토산품 등 다양한 물건이 있었다. 가디건을 살까 했는데 카디간을 취급하는 상점은 거의 없었다. 거의 포기한 상태였는데 앞으로 저녁에 모기에 덜 물리려면 긴 팔 옷이 필요할 것 같았다. 그래서 긴팔 셔츠를 찾아보니 현지인들이 입는 셔츠가 그리 나빠 보이지 않았다.

 

그중 몇 개를 입어 보고 가격을 물어보니 제대로 할인을 해주지 않았다. 그간 긴팔 소매가 있는 셔츠를 살려고 했는데 적당한 시장이나 상점을 구할 수가 없었던 기억이 떠올라 다소 부담이 되더라도 사기로 마음먹었다. 그래서 100링깃을 부르는 것을 85 링깃으로 샀다. 점원은 이 셔츠의 재료가 비단이라고 계속 강조했다. 그런데 그 진위여부는 전혀 알 수 없다.

 

그래도 실크라고 하니 한번 믿어 보고 싶다. 과거 중국 상하이에서 비단공장에 가서 산 비단 넥타이는 지금도 애용할 정도로 그 품질이 아주 좋았다. 이후 비단에 대하여 맹목적적 사랑이 시작되어 온 셈이었다. 이번 센트럴 시장에서 산 비단 셔츠가 필자에게 행운과 행복을 가져다 주기를 기대해 보고 싶다

 

옷을 입고 흥정을 하는데 은근히 말레이지아에 대한 자부심이 높다는 사실을 알게 되었다. 똑같은 셔츠인에 인도네시아산과 말레이지아 산을 비교하면서 말레이지아 산의 셔츠가 절대적으로 좋고 비싸다는 취지로 이야기 했다. 말레이지아 국민의 은근한 자부심을 느낄 수 있는 순간이었다.

 

사실 말레이지아가 국민소득이 동남아에서는 싱가폴 다음으로 높은 것이 사실이다. 또한 말레이지아 사람들은 거의 다가 영어에 능숙해 보였다. 길가나 상점 등에서 영어로 의사소통은 누구나가 다할 수 있는 것 같아서 가히 놀라웠다.

 

우리나라 가격 기준으로도 셔츠가 좀 비싼 것 같기도 하지만 물론 좁은 티셔츠가 아니라 시장 등에서 구입가능한 셔츠를 기준으로 할 때 이야기이다. 당장  긴팔 소매가 필요하니 달리 방법이 없었다.

 

오전 5시 30분이 되지 모닝콜이 왔다. 평소 같으면 전혀 감흥이 없을 텐데 이번 동남아 여행을 하면서 처음 받은 모닝콜 서비스다. 그간 태국 치앙마이, 라오스나 캄보디아에서는 전화기조차 제대로 없어서 모닝콜 서비스를 요청하기 어려웠기 때문이다. 다시 문명의 세계로 온 느낌이다. 이곳은 전화기와 TV는 있지만 냉장고는 없었다.

 

샤워를 하고 짐을 꾸려 프런트로 내려와 체크아웃을 한 뒤 버스 터미널로 향했다. 어제 구입한 통합 교통카드를 터치하니 고약하게도 ‘잔액이 부족하다’는 경고음이 울렸다. 순간 당황하였다.

 

그러고 보니 어제 링깃을 모두 사용하여 한푼도 없었던 것이다. 근처 교통카드 발매기를 통해 티켓을 발급받으려고 하니 ‘현금만 사용 가능하다’는 표시가 나왔다. 아니 이럴 수가!

 

지나가는 사람에게 신용카드로 티겟을 구입할 수 없느냐고 물어보자 없다고 했다. 그래서 그 사람에게 양해를 구하고 1달러를 링깃으로 좀 구입할 수 없겠느냐고 양해를 구하여 겨우 3링깃을 받아 구입할 수 있었다. 그나마 영어 소통이 가능하여 어려움을 피할 수 있었다. 모든 리스크에 대응해야 하는 여행의 기본을 잠시 망각한 것이다.

 

아침 시간이어서 사람들은 많지 않았다. 그렇지만 쾌적했다. 버스터미널에서 버스를 타니 1시간이 지나자 공항에 도착했다. 표를 보니 터미널2가 아니라 터미널 1이었다. 그래서 운전기사에게 터미널1을 어떻게 가느냐고 하자 공항셔틀이 바로 앞에 있다고 알려주었다. 이를 타고 가니 도중에 다시 버스를 갈아타라고 했다. 터미널1과 터미널2는 상당한 거리에 떨어져 있었다. 영국 런던의 히드로 공항이 연상되었다. 아무래도 영국지배를 받아서인지 공항도 비슷하게 건축한 것으로 보여졌다.

 

자카르타 행 비행기가 말레이항공도 있어서 잠시 카운터를 착각하는 등 혼선을 겪고 나서야 겨우 체크인을 할 수 있었다. 자동 항공권 발매기를 사정상 사용할 수 없다고 하니 역시 한국이 이런 면 등에서 최고라는 생각이 절로 들었다.

 

쿠알라룸푸르의 보안검색은 좀 독특했다. 입구에서 한 번 짐 검색을 하고 해당 게이트 앞에서 다시 보안검색을 하였다. 조금 불편하기는 하였지만 그리 오래 걸리지는 아니하고 비교적 원활하게 진행하였다.

 

공항 전체는 잘 꾸며져 깔끔하고 정갈하였다. 공항의 모든 시설도 규모가 크고 여유가 있었다. 왜 이렇게 모든 것을 크고 여유있게 만들었는지 궁금했다. 다음 기회에 한번 자세히 알아 보고 싶었다. 동남아에서 가장 현대적인 도시이고 영어 소통이 원활한 장래 가장 잠재력이 있는 국가로 보였다.
