Istanbul Airport was large and clean. It looked like it was recently built. First, when I tried to withdraw local currency from an ATM, there was only a cash advance machine, and there was no other machine to withdraw money. When I asked the information, they said they didn't know, and just told me the location of the bank. When I went there, there was an ATM at the corner called withdrawing cash. I  managed to withdraw only 500 lira, equivalent to 100 dollars.

 

Then, I stopped by the store to rent device equipment such as a SIM card or Wi-Fi. The Wi-Fi charger is also available only in Turkey, but it was 250 Lira. The sim card is said to be 200 lira. It was very expensive. At a sim card store with a lot of people nearby, it was 160 lira for 5 gigabytes. The cost of using a SIM card in Turkey is more expensive than I thought, but I bought it because there was no other choice.

 

And when I was hungry, I went to a fast food restaurant (Burger King) and bought a Whopper Set for 60 Lira. The price was higher than expected. In Turkey, I thought I should refrain from spending. After that, I found out how I go to the hotel, it took quite a while by bus. 

 

It was about an 8-minute walk from the bus stop. The night view was enchanting as I walked along the Google Maps. So, Koreans, especially women, seemed to like Turkey. The street was cleaner and more beautiful than I expected. It felt like as if I were in Europe. The accommodation was mediocre. I asked for a good room, but there was no response, so I didn't expect it, but when I entered the room, I was able to see the sea. The room was also very neat. It was also relatively large. 

  

The location was also in the center of the city, so I could see important sights on foot. And breakfast was provided free of charge. A bottle of water also was provided free of charge from the refrigerator. Turkish people were good. I'm a little tired from working on the computer and took a shower. I decided to take a break for tomorrow.

  

I fell asleep not knowing when I fell asleep. I woke up at 5 am. It's still dark outside. Above all, the hotel was confortable. Breakfast was also provided. However, it was disappointing that the video upload did not work well even though I was using the hotel Wi-Fi. Anyhow, in general, the hotel was so good.

 

The morning came slowly. I could see the sea from the room. There was also a small terrace. Istanbul approached to me romantic, and I could understand why so many people were attracted by Istanbul. Breakfast was served on the 4th floor top floor. It's a modestly prepared meal. It is mainly bread. I thought it was coffee, but it was Turkish tea. I was surpprised that it tasted so good. I sat by the window and looked out to sea. Came to think of it, this would be a historical place where the East and the West meet.

 

There is a long promenade by the sea. From afar, ships were settling in, and some seemed to be sailing. Everything seemed peaceful. However, this was a place where East and West meet and there were many disputes over issues such as many religions. But this morning seemed exceptionally peaceful.

 

Everyone would talk positively about Istanbul and always wants to come. The night view I had seen yesterday was also very nice. I just looked around for places to visit. Every places was full with an exotic charm. The farthest place was about 2 hours on foot, but the problem was the weather. It was because the weather was colder than I expected and it seemed a bit uncomfortable to walk around.

 

There were many places to see around the hotel. The city was cleaner and more attractive than I expected. I didn't know where to go. I just wanted to take a look around as soon as my footsteps stay. The traffic seemed to be starting. some noises came out. And it made me realize that this would be the largest city in Turkey.

  

Arriving in Istanbul, I realized once again how important this city was geopolitically. So, I decided to visit the Bebek area facing the Bosphorus Strait, passing Sultanahmet Square and the Bosphorus Bridge, the old city center of Istanbul.

 

First, if you looked at the map, the geopolitical location of Istanbul was interesting. Above all, it was the place where Asia and Europe had met. It will be a border with Europe directly such as Bulgaria and also with Romania. It would meet Greece by the sea, and Italy by the Mediterranean Sea. Asia also would meet with Georgia, Armenia, Syria, Iraq and Iran. Africa was also bordered by the Mediterranean Sea with Egypt, Libya, and Tunisia.

 

Istanbul is located in the Sea of Marmara (a tributary of the Mediterranean Sea), the sea connecting the Black Sea and the Aegean Sea, and is located at the point connecting Europe and the Asian continent with the Bosphorus in between. There are many bridges that connect them, but the Bosphorus Bridge is a typical example. I was proud to say that Hyundai E&C built the Bosphorus 3rd Bridge, a bridge in Eurasia and a landmark in Turkey.

 

Istanbul spans Asia and Europe, but is located on the continental side of Europe. Religiously, it is an area where Christianity (Protestantism, Greek Orthodoxism) and Islam come into contact, but Islam and Islamic culture are predominantly established.

 

이스탄불 공항은 크고 깔끔한 분위기였다. 최근에 새로 건립해서 그런 것 같기도 하다. 먼저 ATM에서 현지화를 인출하려고 하니 현금서비스 기계만 있고 달리 통장에서 인출하는 기계는 없었다. 인포메이션에 물어보니 잘 모르겠다고 하고 다만 은행 위치만 알려준다. 그곳에 가니 인출기가 있어 사용해 보니 여기에는 현금인출이라는 코너가 있었다. 100달러에 상당하는 500리라만 인출하였다.

 

이어 심 카드(Sim Card)나 와이파이 등 디바이스 장비를 대여하려고 매장에 들렀더니 와이파이 충전기도 터키에서만 사용 가능한데 250리라였다. 심 카드는 200리라라고 한다. 아주 비쌌다. 근처 사람들이 많은 심카드 가게에서는 5기가에 160리라였다. 생각보다 터키에서 심카드 이용료가 비싸지만 달리 방법이 없어서 이를 구입하였다.

 

그리고 배가 고파 패스트푸드점(버거킹)에 가서 와퍼세트를 사니 60리라다. 생각보다 물가가 비쌌다. 터키에서는 소비를 자제해야겠다는 생각이 들었다. 이어서 숙소까지 가는 편을 알아보니 버스로 꽤시간이 걸렸다. 아래 층으로 가서 버스티켓을 사야했다. 버스티켓 값은 18리라. 생각보다 그리 비싸지 않았다. 구글맵상으로는 1시간30분 이상 걸리는 것으로 나왔다. 버스운전사에게 해당 정거장에 내려달라고 하니 터키말로 무어라고 하는 데 무슨 말인지 모르겠다. 안가는 줄 알고 내리려고 하니 앉아 있으란다. 좀 걱정이 되어 구글맵을 켠 상태로 50분 정도를 가니 숙소 가까이에 도착을 하여 내려달라고 하니 정류장에만 내린다고 기다리란다.

버스에서 내려 걸어서 8분 정도 거리였다. 구글맵을 따라 걸어가는 데 야경이 황홀할 정도였다. 그래서 한국사람들, 특히 여자분들이 터키를 좋아하는 모양이다. 거리가 생각보다는 깔끔하고 아름답다. 마치 유럽에 온 느낌이다. 숙소는 평범했다. 좋은 방을 달라고 했는데 반응이 없는 것 같아 기대하지 않았는데 방에 들어와 보니 바다가 보이는 전경이었다. 방도 아주 깔끔했다. 크기도 비교적 큰편이었다. 가격 대비 가성비가 좋았다.

 

위치도 시내 중심이어서 중요한 명소를 걸어서 볼 수 있는 위치였다. 그리고 아침도 무료로 제공되었다. 냉장고에 생수 한 통도 무료로 제공되었다. 터키 인심이 좋았다. 샤워를 하고 나서 컴퓨터 작업을 하는 데 좀 피곤하다. 내일을위하여 휴식을 취하기로 했다.

 

언제 잠이 들었는지 모르게 잠이 들었다. 일어나 보니 새벽 5시. 아직 밖은 어둡다. 무엇보다 호텔 가성비가 좋았다. 아침도 제공되니 금상첨화다. 다만 호텔 와이파이를 사용했는 데도 동영상 업로드 등이 잘 안 되어 아쉬웠다. 나머지는 다 좋았다.

 

서서히 아침이 밝아 온다. 방에서 바다가 보인다. 조그마한 테라스도 있다. 낭만적이다. 그래서 사람들이 이스탄불을 좋아하는 모양이다. 아침은 4층 톱 플로워에서 한다. 조촐하게 차려진 음식이다. 주로 빵이다. 커피인줄 알았더니 터키고유의 차였다. 그런대로 맛이 좋았다. 창가에 앉아 바다를 내려다 본다. 그러고 보니 이곳이 동양과 서양이 만나는 역사적인 장소이다.

 

바다가에 긴 산책로가 놓여 있다. 멀리서 배가 정착하고 있고 일부는 항해를 하는 모양이다. 모든 것이 평화로워 보인다. 그러나 이곳은 동양과 서양이 만나고 많은 종교 등 문제로 다툼이 많은 곳이다. 그러나 오늘 아침은 유난히 평화로워 보인다.

 

모든 사람들이 이스탄불에 긍정적으로 이야기하여 항상 와보고 싶어 한다. 어제 잠시 본 야경도 너무 멋이 있었다. 간단히 주위에 가볼만한 곳을 찾아보았다. 모든 곳이 이국적인 매력을 풍겼다. 제일 먼 곳은 걸어서 2시간 정도되는데 문제는 날씨다. 생각보다 날씨가 쌀쌀하여 걸어다니기가 좀 불편해 보였기 때문이다.

 

숙소를 중심으로 주변에 볼만한 곳이 아주 많았다. 생각보다 도시가 깔끔하고 매력적이었다. 어디에서 부터 가야할지를 모르겠다. 그냥 발길이 머무는대로 한 번 둘러 보고 싶다. 서서히 교통체증이 시작되는 모양이다. 소음도 좀 들린다. 그리고 보니 이곳이 터키에서 가장 큰 도시이다.

  

이스탄불에 도착하여 이 도시가 얼마나 지정학적으로 의미를 가지는 지에 대하여 다시 한 번 실감하게 되었다. 그래서 이스탄불의 구(舊) 도심지인 술탄 아흐메트 광장과 보스포러스 대교를 지나, 보스포러스 해협을 바라보는 베벡 지역을 다녀오기로 했다.

 

먼저 지도를 보면 이스탄불의 지정학적 위치가 흥미를 끈다. 무엇보다도 아시아와 유럽이 만나는 곳이다. 유럽과는 불가리아와 바로 접경을 이루고 있고 루마니아와도 접한다. 그리고 바다를 두고 그리스와 접하고 이탈리아와도 지중해를 두고 접하고 있다. 아시아는 조지아, 아르메니아, 시리아, 이라크 그리고 이란과도 접경을 이루고 있다. 또한 아프리카는 이집트, 리비아, 그리고 튀니지 등과도 지중해를 두고 접하고 있다.

 

이스탄불은 흑해와 에게해를 잇는 바다인 마르마라해(지중해의 지류인 셈이다.)에 위치하며 보스포러스 해협을 사이에 두고 유럽과 아시아 대륙을 연결하는 지점에 위치하고 있다. 이를 연결하는 다리가 많은데 보스포러스 대교 등이 그 대표적인 예이다. 유라시아의 가교이자 터키의 랜드마크인 ‘보스포러스 제3대교’를 한국인이, 현대건설이 지었다고 하니 자랑스러웠다.

 

이스탄불은 아시아와 유럽에 걸쳐 있으나 유럽 대륙 쪽에 위치해 있다. 종교적으로는 기독교(개신교, 그리스정교)와 이슬람교 등이 접하는 지역이고 다만 이슬람교와 이슬람 문화가 주 되게 자리잡은 셈이다.

 

이슬람 국가이면서 흥미로운 점은 일반 편의점에서 술을 판다는 점이다. 아무래도 관광도시여서 재정적인 측면에서 불가피한 면이 있는 것 같아 보였다. 말레이지아 등 이슬람 국가에서는 편의점에서 술을 살 수 없는 것과 비교하면 좀 특이하다고 해야 할까. 그만큼 문화의 다양성을 인정하는 포용성과 융통성이 있어 보였다.
