The scenery outside the window is different from yesterday. Instead of a barren desert, the green is getting thicker. It feels like i am gradually entering the center of the Inca Empire. Of course occasionally I can see the desert.

I am curious about the scenery of Cusco which used to be the capital of the Inca Empire. Personally,  I have concerns about altitude sickness, but I am so excited to see the mysterious.

Surprisingly, the splendid civilizations of the past appears to be now built in an environment that seems uninhabited, on land that seems to have been abandoned, but the houses are eerie. Still, people seem to live. I see traces of people. I want to ask how they build and live in a barren desert, and I want to know why.

I wonder about the future of South America. It has a lot of desert terrain and also belongs to the rugged terrain of the Andes. Compared to Argentina, where there are many plains. The terrain or land that would otherwise be difficult to develop is wider than I expected. How should they develop it? Development will be  a challenge. It seems that they need to seek a new transformation in the digital age.

Although the Inca civilization was destroyed at the hands of Europeans during the colonial era, the restoration or succession of the faded away civilization would be a task for South American countries. From my point of view, it seems that they have not yet found a clear direction or identity. It may be difficult to find the exact answer, but it is something they never give up.

Seeing the vast continent of South America brings admiration and lamentation as well at the same time. I personally hope to create a new economic model in their own perspective. It seems well worth the challenge.

Endlessly into the high mountains

 

 It is becoming dark again. I'm sleeping soundly in a shaking bus, and I am so surprised that water drops fall on my forehead. It must have come from the bus window. The sound of rain is quite loud. A curved road glides through the darkness. I take my clothes out of my backpack, put them on, and go back to sleep.

It's been a while since I open my eyes, and it's still in the early morning, but I can feel that it looks like it's going to be morning soon. This is what dawn look like. The rain has slowed down a bit. I can see the bushes outside the window. The bus seems to be running through the rugged mountains of the Andes. In Korea, in this case, we would have dug an underground tunnel rather than made a mountain road.

The valley is full of water. The trees are sparse, and the soil has a lot of sand mixed with it. Why is the whole mountain a little unsettling? It's like it's flowing. That's because there aren't many trees.

I can see the mountain top far away. It appears to be surrounded by four cloud layers. I feels like meeting the dignified Andes for the first time.

 

Cusco is located at an altitude of 3400 m above sea level. Baekdusan, the highest mountain in Korea, is only 2744 meters high, so it is located in the higher level than I just imagined. While I fall into various thinking, the bus stops for a while. This is  a city of Abankai. It's surprising that they formed a city in a mountainous area... . Almost most of passengers disembark. There are many structures on the way of construction and left away. What happened? Is they left away due to the economic crisis? It appears that there is no other explanation other than that.

 

The bus turns on again. Only a few passengers remain. The bus is running towards the high mountains. I am so curious about the past and present of the Inca Empire.

It is a kind of surprise that I can see that a wide plain emerges from the high mountains.

  

The bus passing through Avangai accelerates a little and runs towards the top of the mountain. It will take about an hour to go to Cusco. At some point, I can see the highland plains. Now, I can see the village, and the farmland there looks fertile. The surrounding forest is also much richer. However,  there are few houses. Nevertheless, there are quite a few modern buildings. It is built with care, so it blends well with the surrounding landscape. A cemetery in the middle of the village is also in harmony with the surrounding area.

 There is another world on the mountain.  It is a quite amazing scenery in that it is the summit of a huge mountain from the bottom of the Andes, .

 

Finally, the bus arrives in Cusco. The city is bigger than I thought. And even though it is 3400m above sea level, it is difficult to feel such a high altitude. It seems to have preserved its old reputation as the capital of the Inca Empire. Among the cities in South America I have seen so far, Cusco appears to be the most harmonious place between the past and the present. When I get off the bus terminal and ask about Cusco at the information desk, It is lucky that hey are fluent in English. They kindly explain to me the way to get to Machu Picchu in detail. After I get out of the terminal and walked for about 35 minutes, I come to the city center.

 

I find a restaurant in downtown Cusco. It's hard to find a place like a cafe. I see a place selling traditional Peruvian food. It reminds me of chicken dishes last time in Lima. This time, I'm going to try the porks. It is similar to the typical German food, Haksen, and has a pungent smell. When I eat it, it tastes amazing. Of course, it's more because I'm hungry, but it's perfectly to fit my appetite.

 

Taking a little time to look around the city, I find that the city center is beautiful and the security is relatively good. Once again, I visit the IBIS hotel coffee shop for computer work. I have a glass of Peruvian beer that costs 12 sols (340 won per sol). it was not so bad.

Stay overnight at a Korean guest house in Cusco

 

Internet (Wi-Fi) should be available in order to plan future travel plans and solve the problem of debit card suspension. The housing issue has not been decided yet. Suddenly, I think about a Korean guest house. I saw on a blog that a Korean guest house was introduced, so I sent a Kakao Talk. I got a call right away. Accommodation is available just for $10 per night. It can't have been better news. It's also about 900m away... .

 

A young man from a Korean guesthouse welcomes me warmly. As soon as I take off my clothes and take a shower, I think I will live a little longer. Anyway, I go to a nearby Korean travel agency and ask for a Machu Picchu tour schedule. I also learn how to get a visa from the Bolivian embassy. Visa issuance is not complicated, and endemic disease vaccination is not required.

I greet a young man from Korea at the guest house. The young man is traveling with a friend for two weeks in South America before returning to college after being discharged from the military duty. He felt that the local food doesn't fit, so he's resting alone here. he tell me that other friends left for Rapids. They are supposed to meet together again the next day. I feel that he is a sincere young man.

 

Then, I asks him to have a dinner together, and he readily agrees. We go to a nearby Korean restaurant around 6pm. It is surprisingly neatly decorated. I order kimchi stew and a glass of beer. It isn't the kimchi stew I had in Korea, but it tastes good. The young man give me a number of advice while telling his travel story. “Don’t rush too much, take a day off and get your Bolivian visa and enjoy the process.” Eating Korean food and having pleasant conversations with young friend makes the trip more enjpyable.

 

One day, in Europe, I met a young man who was about to return to school after being discharged from the military duty. He was backpacking in Europe. Come to think of it, backpacking seems to be the trend these days after being discharged from the military duty. Very nice and proud It is absolutely necessary to travel the world as early as possible and to experience different world cultures. Travel broadens our perspective on the world.

Talk on the phone with two cards that have been suspended

 

Returning to the guest house, I have to solve the troublesome problem first. I make an international call to Korea.

First, I plan to call the Nonghyup and ask them to cancel the use of the card. It will be  so much inconvenient if I can't use the card. On the other side of the globe, a customer service representative unexpectedly says that my card has been suspended due to suspicion of fraudulent use. The card was played simultaneously in Brazil and Peru. Just 10 hours ago, they tell me that they received a call requesting cash withdrawal from Brazil. So it was rejected.

It was amazing. When I was in Peru,  someone  asked for cash in Brazil... . Of course, it is illegal card duplication. Where was it copied? I realize why I should be careful about using my card abroad.

This time, I called Woori Card. I hear same answer from them.  They stopped due to suspicion of abuse. Most of the fraudulent use is due to the copy of card magnets. I am a little relieved to here that cards with integrated circuit (IC) chips can be used. However, the use of credit cards for online reservations will be limited, but it is unfortunate that cash withdrawals are possible as soon as possible.

 

Agents at both banks give me a call center number that I can call 24 hours a day. It is refreshing to realize that the banking system has become quite consumer-friendly. As the young man who I had dinner with this evening said, Korea must now be a developed country in the perspective of brand and reality as well.

 

Is Cusco one of the best places to live in?

 

I have already fallen in love with the Korean guest house. I only spent one night though. Accommodation is $10. At first, I doubt my ears. This is beyond imagination in terms of cost-effectiveness.

Unfortunately, it is scheduled be closed at the end of February of the next year. It doesn't seem to have high profitability. In fact, getting $10 per person would not be enough to cover the cost, including rent, maintenance, and employee salaries, etc.

 

December to February, the winter in Korea, is the peak season for South American travel, but Cusco is actually the rainy season. And therefore he tell me that there are few foreign tourists during that time. On the other hand, the peak season in Peru is around April. However, it is difficult to find Korean tourists in South America at that time. As a result, it seems that Korean guesthouses are experiencing various difficulties.

 

I'm so sorry. Personally, I am very interested in the guest house. The owner of a Korean guest house I visited while traveling in Croatia was running a guest house after emigrating from Korea to a small business. He had a grand plan to expand the business to real estate development in the future with the bed and breakfast and travel businesses as a foothold.

 

He tell me that there are about 50 local Koreans in Cusco. There are three Korean guest houses and five Korean restaurants. It means that it is already saturated. After I hear his detailed explanation, their decision of closing the business is understandable to me. Although interest in South America is high and the number of tourists who actually visit South America increases every year, it is geographically so far away that some limitations seem inevitable.

It is hoped that a new business model will be developed to revitalize Korean guest houses.

 

 

창밖 풍경이 어제와 다르다. 황량한 사막 대신 녹음이 점점 짙다. 점차 잉카제국의 중심부로 들어선 기분이다. 물론 사막도 보인다.

쿠스코가 잉카제국의 수도였다니 그 전경이 궁금하다. 고산병 우려가 있어 걱정이 앞서지만 기대가 더 크다.

과거 화려한 문명이 지금은 사람이 살지 않은 듯한 환경, 내팽겨진 것 같은 땅에 짓다만 집들로 을씨년스럽다. 그래도 사람이 사는 모양이다. 사람 흔적이 보인다. 척박한 사막 주위에 어떻게 집을 짓고 사는지 묻고 싶고 연유를 알고 싶다.

남미의 미래가 궁금해진다. 사막지형이 많고 또한 안데스의 험준한 지형에 속해 있다. 평원이 많은 아르헨티나와 비교가 된다. 달리 개발하기가 어려운 지형이나 땅은 넓다. 어떻게 개발하면 좋을까. 개발이 과제다. 디지털 시대에 새로운 변신을 모색해야 할 것 같다.

잉카문명이 식민지 개척시대 유럽인의 손에 파괴되었으나 단절된 문명의 복원 내지 계승은 남미 국가의 과제이리라. 필자가 보건대, 아직 그 방향이나 정체성을 찾지 못한 듯 보였다. 그 답을 찾기가 어렵겠지만 그렇다고 포기할 수 없는 일이다.

광활한 남미 대륙을 보니 감탄과 탄식이 함께 한다. 새로운 경제모델의 창출을 기원한다. 도전해 볼 가치는 충분히 있어 보인다. 

고산지대로 끝없이 들어가다

 

 다시 밤이 깊어졌다. 흔들리는 버스 안에서 곤히 자고 있는데 이마 위로 물방울이 떨어진다. 버스 창에 비가 맺혔나 보다. 빗소리가 꽤 요란하다. 깜깜한 어둠 속을 커브 길이 미끄러지듯 이어져 있다. 배낭에서 옷을 꺼내 입고 다시 잠을 청한다.

한참이 지나 눈을 뜨니 아직 먼동이 트기 전이지만 곧 아침이 될 모양이다. 여명이란 게 이런 것이구나. 빗줄기는 조금 잦아졌다. 창밖 수풀이 보인다. 버스가 안데스의 험준한 산 속을 달리나 보다. 한국 같으면 산 길을 내기보다 지하 터널을 뚫었을텐데, 하는 생각을 해 본다.

계곡 물이 가득 넘친다. 나무는 듬성듬성, 흙에는 모래가 많이 섞여 있다. 어째 산 전체가 좀 불안하다. 마치 흘러내릴 듯한 분위기다. 그만큼 나무들이 많아 보이지 않기 때문이다.

멀리 산 정상이 보인다. 4개의 구름층에 둘러싸여 있다. 늠름한 안데스를 처음 마주하는 느낌이다.

 

쿠스코는 해발 3400m의 고산에 위치한다. 한국에서 제일 높다는 백두산이 겨우 2744m이니 짐작할 만하다. 이런 저런 생각을 하는데 버스가 잠시 정차한다. 아방카이라는 도시다. 산간지역에 나름 도시를 형성하고 있다니…. 승객이 거의 다 내린다. 이 도시 역시 짓다만 구조물이 많다. 어떻게 된 것일까? 한때 경제개발이 되다가 경제위기를 맞이하여 중단한 것일까? 그렇게 밖에 달리 설명이 되지 않는다.

 

다시 버스가 시동을 켠다. 몇몇 승객만 남은 셈이다. 고산지대를 향해 달려야 하는 모양이다. 잉카제국의 과거와 현재 모습이 궁금해진다.

고산지대에서 신기하게 넓은 평원지대가 나오다

  

아방카이를 경유한 버스는 좀 더 속력을 내며 산 위를 향해 달린다. 쿠스코까지 1시간 정도가 남았다. 어느 순간, 고원 평야지대에 들어선다. 옹기종기 마을이 보이고 농토도 비옥해 보인다. 주변 숲도 훨씬 풍성하다. 짓다만 집들도 거의 없다. 현대식 건물이 꽤 많다. 나름 정성을 들여 건축하니 주위 풍광과 잘 어울린다. 마을 한 가운데 공동묘지도 주변과 조화를 이루고 있다.

 산 위에 또 다른 세상이 있다. 안데스 저 아래에서 보면 엄청난 산악의 정상인데도 신기할 정도이다.

 

드디어 버스가 쿠스코에 도착한다. 생각보다 도시가 크다. 그리고 해발 3400m임에도 고도를 느끼기 어렵다. 잉카제국의 수도라는 옛 명성을 잘 보전한 것으로 보인다. 지금까지 본 남미의 도시 중에서 가장 과거와 현재가 조화를 이룬 곳이다. 버스터미널에서 내려 인포메이션 데스크에서 이것 저것 쿠스코에 대해 물으니 영어가 유창하다. 마추픽추로 가는 길을 상세하게 설명한다. 터미널에서 나와 35분 정도를 걸으니 도심이 나왔다.

 

쿠스코의 다운타운에서 식당을 찾았다. 카페 같은 곳을 발견하기 어렵다. 페루의 전통음식을 파는 곳이 보여 들어갔다. 지난번 리마에서 닭요리가 생각난 것이다. 이번에는 돼지고기 요기를 먹어 보기로 한다. 독일의 대표음식 학센과 비슷하면서 향긋한 냄새가 자극적이다. 먹어보니 맛이 기가 막히다. 물론 배가 고파서 더 그렇겠지만 식성에 딱 맞다.

 

좀 여유를 가지고 시내를 둘러보니 도심이 아름답고 치안도 비교적 안전하다. 일단 컴퓨터 작업을 위하여 이번에도 IBIS호텔 커피숍을 찾았다. 12솔(1솔이 340원) 하는 페루 맥주를 한 잔했다. 그런대로 괜찮았다.

 

하룻밤을 쿠스코 한인 민박집에 머물다

 

향후 여행일정을 다시 짜고 체크카드 사용정지 문제를 해결하려면 인터넷(와이파이)이 가능해야 한다. 숙소문제도 아직 결정하지 못했다. 문득 한인 민박을 알아 보았다.

어느 블로그에 보니 한인 민박이 소개돼 있어 카톡을 보냈다. 바로 연락이 왔다. 하루 10달러에 숙박이 가능하단다. 반가운 소식이 아닐 수 없었다. 그것도 900m 정도 거리에 있다니….

 

한인 민박집 젊은 청년이 필자를 반갑게 맞아준다. 여장을 풀자마자 샤워부터 하고 나니 좀 살 것 같다. 인근 한국 여행사에 가서 마추픽추 투어 일정을 물었다. 볼리비아 대사관에서 비자 받는 방법도 알게 되었다. 비자 발급이 복잡하지 않고 풍토병 접종도 필요없단다.

민박집에 한국에서 온 청년과 반갑게 인사를 나눴다. 청년은 군에서 전역 후 대학 복학을 앞두고 친구와 2주간 남미여행 중이다. 음식이 맞지 않아 혼자 쉬고 있다. 다른 친구는 라피즈로 떠났다고 한다. 모레 다시 만나기로 했단다. 첫인상이 근실한 청년이라 느껴진다.

 

가능하면 같이 저녁식사를 하자고 하니 흔쾌히 승낙을 한다. 오후 6시쯤 가까운 한식당엘 갔다. 의외로 단정하게 잘 꾸며져 있다. 김치찌개에다 맥주 한 잔을 주문했다. 한국에서 먹던 김치찌개는 아니지만 맛이 좋았다. 청년은 자신의 여행담을 이야기 하면서 필자에게 여러 조언을 해주었다. “너무 서두르지 말고 하루 정도는 쉬면서 볼리비아 비자도 받고 그 과정을 즐기라”는 말이 와 닿는다. 모처럼 한식도 먹고 젊은 친구와 유쾌한 대화를 나누니 여행의 보람이 느껴진다.

 

언젠가 필자는 유럽에서 군 제대 후 복학을 앞둔 청년을 만난 적이 있다. 그는 유럽 배낭여행 중이었다. 그러고 보니 요즘 제대 후 배낭여행이 대세인 모양이다. 무척 반갑고 대견하다. 조금이라도 일찍 세상을 여행하며 서로 다른 세계문화를 경험하는 것이 반드시 필요하다. 여행은 세상에 대한 안목을 넓혀준다.

사용 정지된 2개의 카드문제로 통화하다

 

민박집으로 돌아와 골치 아픈 문제부터 해결해야 한다. 한국으로 국제 전화를 걸었다.

먼저 농협에 전화해 카드 사용중지를 풀어달라고 할 생각이다. 카드를 쓸 수 없으면 여간 불편하지 않다. 지구 정 반대편, 고객센터 담당자가 뜻밖에도 필자의 카드가 부정사용 의심이 들어 사용중지를 했다고 말한다. 브라질과 페루에서 동시에 카드가 사용되었단다. 바로 10시간 전에도 브라질에서 현금인출 요청 연락이 왔단다. 그래서 거절했다는 것이다.

기가 막혔다. 페루에 있는데 브라질에서 현금인출을 요청하다니…. 당연히 카드 복제에로 인한 부정사용이다. 어디서 복제가 됐을까. 해외에서 카드 사용을 조심하라는 이유를 그제야 깨닫는다.

이번에는 우리카드 측에 전화를 걸었다. 마찬가지 답변이다. 부정사용 의심이 들어 중지했단다. 주로 부정사용은 카드 마그네틱 사용에 기인한 것이다. IC(intergrated circuit)칩이 있는 카드는 사용이 가능하다고 해 그나마 안도한다. 인터넷 예약에 카드 사용은 계속 제한되지만 현금인출은 급한대로 가능하다니 불행 중 다행이다.

 

두 은행의 상담원들은 필자에게 24시간 통화가 가능한 콜센터 번호를 알려주었다. 은행 비즈니스가 상당히 소비자 친화적으로 변화했음을 새삼스레 실감한다. 오늘 저녁을 같이한 청년의 말처럼 한국은 이제 명실상부한 선진국이 틀림 없다.

 

쿠스코는 가장 살기 좋은 장소 중 한 곳?

 

한국 민박집에 벌써 정이 든다. 고작 하룻밤을 보냈는데 말이다. 숙박비가 10달러. 처음엔 귀를 의심했다. 이 정도면 가성비 측면에서 가히 상상을 초월할 정도다.

그런데 아쉽게도 2월말 문을 닫는다고 한다. 채산성이 높지 않은 모양이다. 사실 1인당 10불을 받아 임대료, 관리비, 직원 급여 등을 감당하기에 역부족이리라.

 

한국의 겨울인 12월부터 2월까지가 남미여행 성수기인데 실제 쿠스코 현지는 우기에 접어들 때다. 해외 여행객들이 거의 없다. 반면 페루 현지 성수기는 4월경. 그러나 이 시기에 한국 여행객은 남미에서 찾아 보기 어렵다. 그러다 보니 한인 민박집이 여러 어려움을 겪는 모양이다.

 

너무 아쉽다. 개인적으로 민박집에 관심도 많다. 필자가 크로아티아를 여행할 때 찾아간 한인 민박집 사장은 한국에서 중소기업에 다니다 이민을 와서 민박집을 운영하고 있었다. 그는 민박·여행업을 발판으로 향후 부동산 개발로 업종을 확대하려는 원대한 계획을 가지고 있었다.

 

쿠스코의 현지교민은 50명 정도다. 한인민박집은 3곳, 한국식당은 5곳이다. 이미 포화상태다. 폐업을 한다니 충분히 이해가 된다. 남미에 대한 관심이 높고 실제 남미를 찾는 여행객 수가 매년 늘지만 지리적으로 너무 멀어 어느 정도 한계는 불가피해 보인다.

좀 더 새로운 비즈니스 모델을 개발해 한인 민박집이 활성화됐으면 하는 바람이다.
